Cladonia tenerrima (Ahti) S.Hammer

  Basal squamules persistent or evanescent, small, inconspicuous, 3 mm long, 1 mm diam. Podetia 1–5 cm tall, 0.3–1 mm diam., simple or sparingly branched, esquamulose or with a few squamules near base of podetia, greenish grey to brown, the dying base becoming black; apices subulate or with narrow scyphi; scyphi 0.5–2 mm diam., with minutely dentate margins; cortex smooth, areolate, esorediate. Apothecia uncommon, usually one per podetium, terminal on short proliferations from margins of scyphi, 1–2 mm diam., convex, brown to dark brown. Pycnidia marginal on scyphi. CHEMISTRY: K-, KC-, P+ red. Fumarprotocetraric (major) and protocetraric (trace) acids.
     
  Occurs in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. and on Macquarie Is.; also in New Zealand; grows on soil or dead wood.
